The rise of motor vehicle accidents in Queensland

The strain on the current infrastructure, notably the highways, is becoming more and more obvious as the population of our cities continues to increase quickly and as they become more urbanised. In addition to causing ongoing congestion, the increase in traffic volume and the accidents that arise from it also makes people worry about their own safety. There is an increasing need to address these problems thoroughly as frustrations over the quality of our roads rise.

Collision-prone Environments

Highways with heavy traffic are accident prone areas. Stop-and-go traffic, abrupt lane changes, and impatient drivers all contribute to a collision-prone environment, particularly during peak hour traffic. In these circumstances, rear-end collisions, t-bones, and even multi vehicle pile-ups are frequent occurences. The likelihood of accidents rises as traffic density climbs, and sadly, fatal injuries frequently follow.

Highway accidents can result in a variety of injuries, from minor scrapes and bruises to serious ones including fractured bones, brain trauma, and spinal cord injuries. The severity of these injuries can be significantly exacerbated by the faster average speeds at which highway traffic travels. Furthermore, in crowded areas, emergency response times may be prolonged, endangering the health of individuals involved even more.

Limited Infrastructure

The difficulties brought on by  ongoing road congestion and the accompanying injuries are urgent issues that require action. More close to home, the construction of a new road parallel to the existing M1 between Brisbane and the Gold Coast is one potential solution that could soon be available to people in South-East Queensland. Although this strategy promises to ease traffic and cut down on accidents as outlined in the ABC’s article, ‘Why do we keep building roads?’, it’s crucial to understand that creating a new highway is a challenging task. Planning, obtaining money, taking into account environmental factors, and building need time, and the advantages could not be felt for several years.

Although the idea of a new highway is exciting, it’s important to realise that it ill take time for this vision to become a reality. In the interim, it’s critical to drive safely on the highways since, if at all possible, getting there safely is far more important than getting there on time.
